Abstract

This study deals with revealing the importance of the sources preserved at the Libyan Center for Archives and Historical Studies and marked with Ottoman documents, as a source for studying an important period in Libya’s modern history.

The importance of this study lies in that it attempts to investigate some of the ambiguous aspects of the state’s history during the first and second Ottoman eras, by relying on original sources that can contribute to drawing some features of the state’s economic history, away from narrating the political history.

The study aims to demonstrate the importance and role of the Ottoman documents preserved at the Libyan Center for Historical Studies in monitoring and studying important aspects of economic history through two Ottoman documents that dealt with the subject of tax exemptions and their impact on the social division of Libyan society.
