The Role of Merchants and the State in Markets Regulating in West Africa During the Period from 3-10 AH / 9-16 AD

This research examines the role of merchants and the state in regulating markets in West Africa during the period from the 3rd–10th centuries AH / 9th–16th centuries CE. Its central problem focuses on how merchants and major kingdoms contributed to controlling commercial activity and ensuring its continuity, despite only passing references in historical sources. The study explores the regulatory mechanisms adopted by the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.The significance of the research lies in filling a gap in studies that have addressed the history of trans-Saharan trade without focusing on the internal organization of these markets or on the distinguished social and economic status of merchants as the “backbone” of the economy and society.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical historical approach by collecting data related to commercial activity from primary and secondary sources, then comparing and analyzing them to reveal the nature of economic relations and the mechanisms of market administration within the spatial framework of West Africa and the temporal scope of the study period.
The findings demonstrate the diversity of markets, ranging from local daily markets to regional periodic markets and specialized international markets (such as gold and salt markets).
