Abstract

The oath is one of the Arabic styles commonly used in maqamat that require emphasis and strengthening of speech. This study is concerned with tracing the oath formulas mentioned in the poetry of the Libyan poet Rashid al-Zubayr al-Senussi, so it investigates their types and shows their effect on the meaning and the extent of their contribution to conveying the poet’s idea to the recipients of the text. The study consists of two sections: Theoretical includes a description of the style of the oath and its rulings, and the applied one deals with identifying the apparent and implicit oath structures in Al-Senussi’s poetry and then analyzing them. Among the results of the research is the diversity of the oath structures and the multiplicity of ways of formulating it in Al-Senusi’s poetry, in which oaths are made using letters, verbs, and nouns with the diversity of what is sworn by, and the availability of oaths of all kinds: explicit and non-swearing. The explicit, the informative, and the interrogative, and that what came from these constructions was in accordance with the linguistic rules decided by the scholars and did not violate them
