Psychological Alienation and its Relationship with Academic Motivation among University Students

Abstract

The research aims to identify the relationship between psychological alienation and academic achievement motivation among university students. To achieve the research objective, two tools were prepared: the Psychological Alienation Scale and the Academic Achievement Motivation Scale. After verifying the validity and reliability of the research tools, they were applied to a sample of students from the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Sabratha during the academic year (2025-2026). The sample consisted of (95) male and female students. The research reached the following results:

The level of psychological alienation was moderate among the university student sample, and there were statistically significant differences in the level of psychological alienation among the sample members according to gender (male-female), with the difference in favor of male students. As for the variable of year of study (second-fourth), there were differences in favor of second-year students. The academic achievement motivation was moderate among the sample members, and there were statistically significant differences in the level of academic achievement motivation according to gender (male-female), with the difference in favor of female students. Also, there were statistically significant differences in the level of academic achievement motivation among the sample members according to Among the research sample members according to the variable of academic year (second to fourth), with a difference in favor of fourth-year students. And there is a negative direct correlation between psychological alienation and academic motivation, meaning that as the level of psychological alienation increases, the level of motivation for academic achievement decreases.
