Identifying the Training Needs of Specialists in Library and Information Science

Abstract

This study examines the identification of training needs in the field of library and information science as a fundamental approach to planning, designing, and developing training programs in response to the rapid professional and technological changes taking place in the field. The study addresses the problem of the extent to which traditional approaches to identifying training needs can respond to emerging transformations in the library and information environment and identify the knowledge and skills required by professionals to adapt to these changes. It aims to clarify the concept of training needs, identify their main sources, highlight their significance in developing training programs, and examine approaches for improving and updating such programs in accordance with contemporary professional and technological developments. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by analyzing relevant literature and previous studies on training needs and professional training in the field of library and information science, while examining contemporary trends in professional competency development. The significance of the study lies in emphasizing the role of accurate training-needs assessment in enhancing staff competencies and achieving alignment between existing capabilities and the requirements of the modern work environment. The study concludes that the effectiveness of training programs is closely associated with the accuracy of identifying the actual needs of professionals. It also demonstrates that the development of training in the library and information field requires continuous mechanisms for assessing training needs, regularly reviewing program content and delivery methods, and strengthening digital, technological, and professional skills to enable practitioners to keep pace with rapid developments in the information environment
